Overview The selection of imagery plays a role in setting the tone of the site. Images provide an avenue to associate the site with people, places and things. A common style of imagery helps the brand obtain consistent association. Dynamic photography should be used to complement the existing print marketing efforts and add dimensionality to the site. Portraits should have a light tone and preferably be outdoors.
Note the following when selecting graphics and/or multimedia for your website: • Use image width and height tags to prevent the page from “bouncing around” as it loads. • A text equivalent for every non-text element shall be provided by use of alt-tags or be referenced on the page. Refer to the Website Accessibility Policy. • Be sensitive to user resources (e.g. CPU speed, RAM, Graphics, Connectivity) necessary to run multimedia and render images. • Optimize images and use them at their actual size to decrease download times. • Minimize the use of animated GIF’s as they can add unnecessary distraction. • If .wav and other audio files are used, keep them to a minimum so as not to distract your reader from the central theme or message. All sound should be optional for your visitor. Text versions should be available for those who cannot access the file for disability reasons or for lack of the necessary reader. • Protect yourself from copyright violations. Ensure proper ownership of all graphics and multi-media before placing it on your website. If you wish to use a graphic from another website, you must assume it is already copyrighted and get written permission prior to use. There are many locations on the web for purchasing graphics for web use. It is wise to make sure the source of any item you do not personally create, is free from copyrights before placing them on the web.
