Million Transactions: An Arizona E-Government First
(PHOENIX – June 21, 2002) In a single month, over one million E-Government transactions were conducted online in Arizona, ranging from motor vehicle transactions, game and fish licenses, tax filings and others.
Governor Jane Dee Hull said, “E-Government is more than a website. E-Government can redefine the relationship for government to citizens by delivering these fundamental services directly to the citizenry using safe, secure and convenient technologies of the 21st Century. The Arizona @ Your Service web portal
(www.az.gov) is a gateway for citizens to easily access state government.”
In May 2002 alone, the total number of e-government transactions surpassed 1 million with online services ranging from motor vehicle registrations renewals, obtaining hunting and fishing licenses, filing individual tax returns, ordering birth and death certificates and many others. This count of transactions does not include the millions of information requests or printing of online forms, but rather real transactions citizens and businesses can do directly with Arizona State Government. In May 2002, over 52,000 vehicle owners renewed vehicle registrations through the Internet or phone, with 1 in 5 citizens choosing this avenue.
State of Arizona Chief Information Officer and Director of the Government Information Technology Agency Craig Stender explained, “Arizona wants to add value to government using technology solutions. The top technology initiatives are: e-government, security and enterprise architecture and they are not mutually exclusive. Arizona is building an enterprise-wide architecture to host e-government solutions for citizens to do business online. The architecture is a road map with directional standards, routes and integration tools, as well as security and functionality for safe, online transactions.”
Earlier this week, Governor Hull announced that Arizona tied for first place in E-Government social services in the 2002 Digital State Survey.
