4-5-06:
Steering Committee Delivers Roadmap
for E-Health
to Governor Napolitano
The
Arizona Health-e Connection Steering Committee
delivered its Roadmap for the future of electronic
health records to Governor Napolitano on April 4,
2006. The Steering Committee, appointed by Governor
Napolitano in September 2005, is composed of health,
technology, and business executives along with
consumers.
The Roadmap outlines a path for Arizona’s health
care community to securely exchange medical
information statewide with the goal of reducing
costs and improving the quality of patient care in
Arizona. The Roadmap also sets the stage for the
advent of electronic medical records in the future.
“Though
implementing the Roadmap will be a long and
challenging process,” said Chris Cummiskey, Arizona
Chief Information Officer and Co-Chair of the
Steering Committee, “we are confident this project
will be successful because the health care community
is united behind the roadmap’s objectives. Through
Governor Napolitano’s leadership, the Committee has
established the momentum needed to move e-health
forward in Arizona.”
“Everyone is surprised that we have developed the
Roadmap with this much specificity in such a short
period of time,” said Anne Winter, Governor
Napolitano’s Healthcare Policy Advisor and a member
of the Steering Committee. “I think people will
continue to be surprised with the results going
forward because Arizona’s health care community is
working together as a team.”
eHealth Initiative, a not-for-profit organization
that specializes in assisting states and local
communities to develop health information exchanges,
was retained by St. Luke’s Health Initiatives and
BHHS Legacy Foundation to mentor Arizona in
developing a roadmap.
“We were pleased to work with Arizona in developing
the Roadmap,” said Janet Marchibroda, Chief
Executive Officer of eHealth Initiative. “Arizona is
emerging as a key leader among a handful of state
initiatives that are making great strides in
improving health and health care through information
technology and health information exchange.”
The Roadmap was developed with participation from
over 200 Arizonans representing health care
providers, payers and patients with strong
representation from rural constituencies. This
diverse group donated thousands of hours by
participating on the Steering Committee or various
task groups organized to focus on specific issues.
