Obtain High-Speed Internet Access
A collaboration of business, community and
government organizations recently unveiled a new Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi)
internet network in the Town of
Superior. This network allows for access to high-speed internet
throughout all of Superior and the neighboring Boyce Thompson
Arboretum State Park.
“The
addition of broadband enables students, citizens and businesses of Superior to
participate in 21st century technology,” said Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano.
“Because of this work, Arizona now has its own model that can be replicated in
almost any rural area. Arizona communities will benefit as we continue to move
Arizona’s economy toward innovation and a knowledge-based economy.”
The Superior Wi-Fi network wad developed through a coalition of resources from
both private and public sources. Primary funding was provided through a $270,000
grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Business Enterprise Grant
program and a $35,000 grant from the Commerce and Economic Development
Commission. In addition, the Town of Superior invested $25,000 and the Superior
business community provided $10,000 in matching funds for the project.
“Developing
a Wi-Fi network of that magnitude requires a large amount of cooperation and
collaboration between business, community and government interests,” said State
CIO Chris Cummiskey at an official wire-cutting ceremony on June 13, 2007. Over
200 people were in attendance.
High-speed wireless Internet infrastructure in Superior will facilitate economic
growth, business development, and improved information technology in schools and
government buildings. It also provides high speed internet access at an
affordable price to residents who had previously not been able to reap the
benefits of the digital age. WI-VOD Corporation was contracted for the project.
“Together, we have achieved many accomplishments in a short amount of time,”
said Superior Mayor Michael Hing. “Volunteers dedicated time, sweat and dollars
on this project; now we can grow our business economy and a talented, skilled
workforce.”
