Rural Broadband Initiatives
“Smart” Canamex Corridor initiatives:
GITA is developing strategies and projects that promote Broadband
infrastructures in the areas defined by Arizona’s Canamex Corridor.
Current projects include:

Wi Fi
Project for First Responders I-19 – A US Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) Grant project, this project was overseen by GITA. It
involved deploying Wireless broadband capability along a 30-mile
corridor of Interstate 19, from Rio Rico, Arizona, to Green Valley,
Arizona. The WiFi installation was completed in July of 2005 and
currently provides Broadband access for First Responder agencies,
local business and residences along Interstate 19.

Southern Pinal County Broadband and WiFi Project – Following the
TOPAZ model, this is a comprehensive project, to bring additional
Broadband access to the deficit areas in Pinal County along the
Canamex Corridor. The project will include locally coordinated
grant/loan funding from USDA sources. GITA is partnering with the
Arizona Dept of Commerce, Pinal County, local community and business
leaders to accomplish this project.
Town of
Superior WiFi Project – A joint effort between the Arizona Dept
of Commerce, Pinal County the Town of Superior, the USDA and many local
businesses, this project brought broadband connectivity to this historic
mining town and vicinity. Initial build-out phase was successfully
completed on June 13th, 2007.
Town of Wickenburg Wi-Fi Project – Utilizing the TOPAZ model, GITA
worked with public and private officials in the town of Wickenburg to
encourage development of broadband infrastructure throughout the town.
